Book List

These books have transformed my life. They can transform yours as well.

1. The Writer's Journey

Christopher Vogler
Paper | Audiobook

The hero's journey is one of the most powerful stories that we continue to tell each other. In it, a hero has a problem, finds a guide, then goes on a quest which ends with him becoming a better person. Vogler's explanation of this monomyth created by Joseph Campbell has been influential in my growth as a writer and as a business owner.

2. On Writing

Stephen King
Paper | Audiobook

Stephen King is one of the most prolific authors of our generation. I have probably read 50 of his books, but he just keeps shooting them out like a man possessed. On Writing is part memoir and part instruction manual. The book abounds with wisdom about overcoming rejection and how writing brought him back from his darkest moments, but it also gives some of the best writing advice that I've ever read. I re-read this book at least once a year.

3. Mastery

Robert Greene
Paper | Audiobook

This is the book that inspired Kaizen Life. Robert Greene explores the lives of some of the greatest people who have ever lived and explains the journey and habits of how they achieved the highest levels of their field. Anyone can be a just need the right plan of attack.

4. Outliers

Malcolm Gladwell
Paper | Audiobook

Gladwell offers a unique perspective on what it takes to be successful. Through his interesting mix of investigative journalism and entertaining prose, Gladwell breaks down how different unusual factors contribute to create individuals who seem to fall so far from the norm that they can only be called outliers. The audiobook version (which I listened to) is read by the author. Could not stop listening once it got started.
